STS Database SystemIt is my great pleasure to finally announce the launch of the new database system that is responsible for handling the Signal Transduction Society's needs concerning membership data processing and meeting registrations. We hope that this system will enable our users to keep their profiles updated more easily and to handle meeting related transactions more efficiently than during the last years. The functionality will be expanded in the future. What is new and how it worksYou may have already noticed that in the menu to the left, the 'Members'-button has been replaced with one button that reads 'Login'. This is your new entry point to the database system. When you click on that button, you will be prompted for your username and password. Notice, that we have switched to individual usernames and passwords, that means each user will have her own account. Now you can even set your own username and password (see below). Logging onAs a member of the STS you should have received an email containing your assigned username and a temporary password. Using these, you can log on to the system. If you forgot your password you can request a new one to be sent to the email address that has been registered with us. In the case you have not received this email but are a member of the STS, please contact me by email at w3@sigtrans.de. Non-MembersIf you are not yet a member of the STS and would like to register for the 2001 meeting in Jena, you will be required to register as a new user to the system. This is completely free of charge and does not involve any obligation to the STS. You can register as a new user directly from the login screen. The data you enter will only be used to keep you updated concerning the meeting proceedings. The rationale behind this is simply that once you are known to the database, we can pull up your details from the Database and prefill the registration details like your name etc. from the stored data. Of course, as a member you'd benefit from that more than as a user (hint, hint). Once logged onAfter you have logged on, you will see your personal menu. At the moment you can update your details, register for the 2001 meeting in Jena, use our form to make your hotel reservation and submit your abstract. On the top right you will see a context menu from where you can always go back to the main menu. First of all we would recommend that you have a look at your profile to make sure that your data is current and accurate as it will be used to prefill the forms. Changes to your data will be acknowledged by email. The next step would be to register for the meeting if you'd like to attend. And of course you can submit your abstract. Abstract SubmissionFormatting your abstractBoth the title and the body of your abstract can be formatted. The following formatting codes are available:
Those codes can also be nested, so if you want to use bold and bold-italic text, you would nest the formatting codes: bold and bold-italic text will render as bold and bold-italic text. So they work just like braces in mathematics. Remember that once you use nested code, you should make sure that that nesting is correct: bold and bold-italic text may display correctly but is not what you want. Once you have your abstract formatted, press on the preview button to check whether the data is complete and to diplay a rendered version of your abstract. If you are satisfied with te formatting, you can submit the abstract or go back and reedit. Editing a submitted abstractAfter you have submitted your abstract, you can still change it until the deadline. Any abstract you have submitted will be listed in your personal menu after you logged in, just like the meeting registration and hotel reservation. Help is just an email awayIf you have any questions or encounter any errors while using the new database system, please do not hesitate to contact me immediatly. Cornelius Bartke
